About the Healthy Mouth Project

Rachel Lawton’s project is all about empowering prisoners to improve their Oral Health.

The prison Dental service is in high demand due to longstanding neglect in Oral Health and lack of knowledge.  By only treating the patient’s dental disease, we are not helping to prevent further problems.  By empowering our patients we are hoping to reduce inequalities in Oral Health.

In 2021, 100% of patients who have attended dental appointments in HMP Wymott had dental disease.

We will use various formats and innovative content, as well as years of prison experience to improve patients’ knowledge in Oral Health prevention.
